An “exquisite” art project by  Emmanouil Zacharioudakis

«Imago ignota» is an art project, devised by artist Emmanouil Zacharioudakis, inspired by the Surrealists' game «Cadavre exquis» (exquisite corpse) as well as the concept of overlapping street graffiti.  «Imago ignota» (unknown image) because nobody could have guessed the result of the creative process, when it comes to artwork created by multiple artists.

Zacharioudakis created 15 square-format frames, made of pulverized paper, and invited 14 of his artist friends to be part of the project. Each work is created by 3 artists. Each artist, without any restrictions or general direction whatsoever, “painted” 3 works, respectively acting as 1st, 2nd and 3rd in turn. There was no essential strategy on who would take turn in every canvas and the collaborative teams were random. The journey has been a long and painful one: the project spanned a staggering 3 years (2013-2016).

The process resembled a fascinating relay race, characterized by consecutive refutative and complementary approaches. The fact that the artists significantly differ, as far as their departure point, artistic intentions, expressive means, trajectory and even age group are concerned, renders the venture a particularly interesting one.

The open nature of the project posed a challenge as well as an exercise in self-discipline for the artists who had to rely on their own discretion to make decisions about the lines between respect and free expression, as far as the treatment of their peers' work was concerned. Participating artist Manolis Charos calls the venture a “jam painting”, very much in the style of a musical jam session, performed mainly for the participants' enjoyment but often yielding spectacular results. The element of impromptu is indeed present in the artworks, and it is interesting to point out that the artistic line up consists of artists who would normally not be seen together in an exhibition, adding another intriguing layer to the venture. This unexpected element appealed to most of the participants, who were glad to take up the challenge and engage in the artistic play with their fellow artists.

The result? 15 unpredictable, unique, «exquis» artworks.
